The Ancient Migrations were a series of population movements that reshaped several continents of the world of I Reincarnated as a Goblin.
These migrations became possible through the use of the Barrier-Crossing Artifacts, three ancient artifacts capable of passing through the otherwise impassable barriers separating the continents.
At the time, the travelers did not understand that they were moving between continents of the same world.
Because the barriers were believed to mark the end of the world, crossing them was interpreted as traveling into an entirely different world.
Overview
The continental barriers isolated populations for extremely long periods of time.
Civilizations could develop without knowing that other continents and peoples existed beyond those boundaries.
The creation of the Barrier-Crossing Artifacts broke that isolation for the first time.
Several major migrations followed:
- Elves and Giants reached Muxuu.
- Half-Elves later migrated from Muxuu to Disc.
- Semi-Giants later migrated from Muxuu to Humel.
- Dark Elves and Lycanthropes later evacuated to Halvmen.
Ancient Understanding of the Journeys
Modern knowledge describes these movements as migrations between continents.
The travelers themselves understood them differently.
The barriers surrounding their known lands appeared to be the absolute limits of existence.
Crossing one therefore seemed equivalent to leaving one world and entering another.
This misunderstanding influenced how the earliest migrations were remembered and described.
First Major Crossing
The earliest major crossing involved Elves and Giants.
After becoming involved in the struggle over the three Barrier-Crossing Artifacts, they eventually used one of them to travel beyond the barrier surrounding their known lands.
They believed they were entering another world.
In reality, they arrived in Muxuu.
Muxuu Before Their Arrival
Muxuu was already inhabited by two major native populations: Humans and Bararos.
Humans and Bararos had their own long and complicated history before the arrival of Elves and Giants.
The newcomers therefore did not arrive on an empty continent.
Contact With Humans
Contact between the newcomers and the native Humans was not peaceful.
The arrival of Elves and Giants brought together populations that had evolved and developed separately behind the continental barriers.
The resulting conflicts and interactions eventually produced two new mixed populations.
Half-Elves
Half-Elves originated through the mixing of Humans and Elves.
They inherited characteristics from both ancestral populations but formed their own distinct mixed population.
Their later history would become strongly connected to one of the Barrier-Crossing Artifacts.
Semi-Giants
Semi-Giants originated through the mixing of Humans and Giants.
Like the Half-Elves, they developed as a distinct population within Muxuu.
Their eventual migration would carry them to an entirely different continent.
Shared Circumstances
Half-Elves and Semi-Giants shared difficult circumstances within the societies that had produced them.
Neither group was fully accepted by the populations from which they descended.
These conditions encouraged cooperation between the two mixed peoples.
Their alliance eventually became important in their struggle against the Elves and Giants.
Seizing the Remaining Artifacts
Half-Elves and Semi-Giants eventually rose against the Elves and Giants.
During these events, they obtained the two Barrier-Crossing Artifacts that remained available.
The third artifact had already been lost.
Possession of the two artifacts gave the mixed populations a way to leave Muxuu and search for lands beyond the barriers.
The Half-Elf Migration
A major Half-Elf population used one of the artifacts to leave Muxuu.
Their journey eventually brought them to Disc.
Like the earlier Elves and Giants, they believed they had entered another world.
Arrival in Disc
Disc was already inhabited.
One of its major native populations was an intelligent race connected to prehistoric animal lineages.
This race included lineages associated with creatures such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Spinosaurus, Mammoths, Saber-Toothed Tigers, and other ancient animals.
The official name of this race has not yet been established.
Half-Elves in Disc
Half-Elves eventually established themselves primarily in the central regions of Disc.
Their relationship with the native Prehistoric Race was comparatively peaceful during this period.
Knowledge of craftsmanship and toolmaking previously learned from Humans and Elves also became part of their contribution to life on the continent.
Half-Elves Who Remained in Muxuu
Not every Half-Elf participated in the migration.
A portion remained in Muxuu.
Over many generations, their descendants continued reproducing with Humans.
Through Human Lineage Assimilation, these descendants gradually returned to being classified as Humans while retaining elements of Elven ancestry.
This became the origin of Human populations carrying Elven Lineage.
The Semi-Giant Migration
A major Semi-Giant population used the second available artifact.
They left Muxuu and eventually reached Humel.
From their historical perspective, they too believed they had traveled to another world.
Humel Before Their Arrival
Humel was not uninhabited.
The Astals already existed there before the arrival of the Semi-Giants.
Astals were therefore native inhabitants of Humel rather than descendants of the migration from Muxuu.
Semi-Giants in Humel
The migrating Semi-Giants became an important population of Humel.
They became particularly associated with the continent's mountainous and high-altitude regions.
The Astals remained more strongly associated with the extensive forested regions.
The exact political relationship between these populations during the ancient period has not yet been fully established.
Semi-Giants Who Remained in Muxuu
As with the Half-Elves, not every Semi-Giant left Muxuu.
Some remained and continued mixing with Humans over later generations.
Their descendants were eventually absorbed into Human populations through Human Lineage Assimilation.
This allowed elements of Giant Lineage to survive among Humans.
The Lost Third Artifact
While the Half-Elves and Semi-Giants used the two remaining known artifacts, the third artifact had disappeared much earlier.
Its location remained unknown for an extended period.
It eventually resurfaced during a completely different historical crisis.
Dark Elf Crisis
Dark Elves had a long-standing hostile relationship with Elves.
Their conflict eventually caused severe losses.
Not every Dark Elf population was destroyed, but the situation became serious enough to force some groups into desperate measures.
Lycanthrope Crisis
Lycanthropes were simultaneously facing their own conflict.
Their traditional enemies were Vampires.
Like the Dark Elves, they suffered severe losses during this period.
The Alliance
Dark Elves and Lycanthropes had not originally been part of the same conflict.
Their enemies were different.
However, the desperate conditions facing both peoples eventually pushed surviving groups into an alliance.
This alliance became the foundation of the final major migration associated with the ancient artifacts.
Rediscovery of the Third Artifact
During this period, the allied Dark Elves and Lycanthropes discovered the third Barrier-Crossing Artifact.
The artifact that had been lost for generations suddenly became their greatest opportunity for survival.
Unlike the previous migrations, the crossing that followed was not primarily an expedition seeking new lands.
It was an evacuation.
The Evacuation to Halvmen
The surviving alliance could not evacuate everyone.
Many capable warriors and fighters remained behind.
Priority was given to people less suited to remaining on the front lines, including children, elders, women, and other vulnerable members of the population.
Those evacuated used the artifact to cross the barrier.
They eventually arrived in Halvmen.
Arrival in Halvmen
The refugees believed they had reached another world.
In reality, they had reached another continent of the same world.
Halvmen was already populated by numerous native races and possessed an extremely different supernatural environment from the regions the refugees had previously known.
Settlement in Poorer Regions
The refugee populations eventually became concentrated in less prosperous and lower-Mana regions of Halvmen.
This did not mean that Halvmen itself was a low-Mana continent.
The continent as a whole possessed considerable Mana and many valuable supernatural resources.
The refugees simply ended up in comparatively poorer regions.
Isolation
Dark Elves and Lycanthropes possessed more organized knowledge of Mana than many local populations they encountered.
However, the refugees did not openly distribute their cultivation knowledge among the native inhabitants.
This contributed to their later isolation from the stronger populations of the continent.
Losses During Migration
Migration across the barriers did not preserve every aspect of the migrants' former civilizations.
Knowledge, possessions, records, techniques, and important resources were lost over time.
Some information survived only as incomplete traditions.
Other knowledge disappeared entirely.
Four Historical Routes
| Migrating Population | Origin | Destination | Nature of Crossing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elves and Giants | Beyond Muxuu's Barrier | Muxuu | Expedition |
| Half-Elves | Muxuu | Disc | Migration |
| Semi-Giants | Muxuu | Humel | Migration |
| Dark Elves and Lycanthropes | Former Homelands | Halvmen | Emergency Evacuation |
Long-Term Effects
The Ancient Migrations permanently altered the racial and cultural development of multiple continents.
Muxuu gained mixed Human-descended populations.
Disc received the Half-Elves.
Humel received the Semi-Giants.
Halvmen received Dark Elf and Lycanthrope refugees.
Meanwhile, Humans in Muxuu retained Elven and Giant ancestry through Lineage Assimilation.
Future Consequences in Disc
The Half-Elf migration would have consequences far beyond the ancient era.
In the future known to César, Humans would eventually reach Disc by force.
Half-Elves would be incorporated into Human society as a subordinate Human-related population rather than being completely exterminated.
The native Prehistoric Race would suffer an even more severe fate.
Its males would be interpreted as monsters or beasts and systematically eliminated, while its Human-looking females would be forcibly absorbed into Human populations.
Through Human Lineage Assimilation, elements of their ancient racial abilities would eventually survive inside Human descendants even after the original independent culture disappeared.
Future Consequences in Humel
Humel would also face catastrophic events in the future.
Humans would eventually come into conflict with the native Astals.
Because Astals naturally possess no Mana, future Human ideology would interpret their existence as unacceptable.
This would eventually lead to attempts to exterminate them.
The Semi-Giant population would remain part of Humel's broader historical legacy.
Future Consequences in Halvmen
In the future timeline remembered by César, the refugee populations living in Halvmen would eventually disappear from the continent.
This does not mean Dark Elves and Lycanthropes became globally extinct.
Other populations and powerful individuals belonging to those races survived elsewhere.
History Becomes Myth
As generations passed, knowledge of the original migrations became increasingly distorted.
People forgot that populations had once crossed the great barriers.
Ancient races became legends.
Real encounters were transformed into folklore.
Even the belief that travelers had once entered separate worlds survived despite the true journeys having occurred between continents.
César's Perspective
César possesses an unusual advantage when examining this history.
His memories of the future story provide information about migrations, surviving lineages, lost populations, and events that have not yet occurred in his current era.
This means he can recognize relationships between races and continents that most people living around him cannot.
However, even César's information is incomplete.
Some historical truths were never discovered in the future he remembers.
