Lycanthropes are an ancient Demihuman race capable of transforming between a completely human appearance and a powerful anthropomorphic wolf form.
They are historical enemies of the Vampires and later became allies of the Dark Elves during a period of severe conflict that eventually forced part of both populations to flee across the continental barriers.
Some Lycanthropes are also born with a much rarer racial ability that allows them to transform into enormous wolves during a full moon.
Overview
Lycanthropes are a transformation-based Demihuman race.
In their ordinary state, they are physically indistinguishable from Humans. Their wolf characteristics only become visible after transformation.
Their standard transformation grants them a powerful anthropomorphic wolf body, while a portion of the population possesses an additional and significantly stronger transformation.
Classification
Lycanthropes belong to the broad racial group known as Demihumans.
They are distinct from Devilhumans, Semihumans, Beastkin, Humans, and other major racial classifications.
Human Form
In their normal form, Lycanthropes are physically indistinguishable from Humans.
They do not naturally display permanent wolf ears, tails, claws, fur, muzzles, or other obvious animal characteristics while in human form.
Without additional information or supernatural means of identification, appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish a Lycanthrope in human form from an ordinary Human.
Hair color, eye color, skin tone, height, and other ordinary physical characteristics vary between individuals.
Lycanthropic Transformation
Lycanthropes possess the racial ability to transform into an anthropomorphic wolf form.
This form retains an upright humanoid structure while developing pronounced lupine characteristics.
These include fur, a wolf-like head and muzzle, pointed ears, claws, a tail, and a substantially more powerful physical body.
The transformation enhances the Lycanthrope's physical capabilities and represents one of the defining characteristics of the race.
Transformation Before the Mana Core
A Lycanthrope does not need to have formed a Mana Core in order to transform.
However, transformation before the formation of the Mana Core carries a serious disadvantage.
A Lycanthrope transforming at this stage does not properly retain its normal rational awareness while transformed and instead acts primarily through instinct.
Recognition of Transformed Lycanthropes
Even in this irrational state, a transformed Lycanthrope instinctively recognizes other transformed members of its own race.
Because of this instinctive recognition, it will not normally attack another Lycanthrope who is also currently transformed.
Recognition of Human-Form Lycanthropes
The same protection does not fully apply when another Lycanthrope remains in human form.
Since human-form Lycanthropes are physically indistinguishable from Humans, an irrational transformed Lycanthrope may fail to recognize one of its own kind.
In such circumstances, there is approximately a 50% chance that the transformed Lycanthrope will attack the human-form member of its own race.
Mana Core and Control
The formation of a Mana Core represents an important threshold for a Lycanthrope's control over its transformation.
Once the necessary development has been achieved, the loss of rationality associated with transforming before the Mana Core is no longer the defining limitation of the transformation.
The existence of this racial transformation before Mana Core formation also means that the ability itself should not be mistaken for proof that an individual is already an advanced Mana cultivator.
Giant Wolf Transformation
Approximately three out of every ten Lycanthropes are born with an additional racial ability.
These individuals can transform into an enormous quadrupedal wolf.
This form is fundamentally different from the standard anthropomorphic wolf transformation.
Rather than maintaining a humanoid structure, the Lycanthrope assumes the form of a gigantic wolf.
Power
The Giant Wolf Transformation is vastly more powerful than the standard anthropomorphic transformation.
Its power is approximately ten times greater than that of the normal transformed form.
This makes Lycanthropes born with the ability potentially exceptionally dangerous when the transformation is available.
Full Moon Restriction
The enormous increase in power comes with a severe restriction.
The Giant Wolf Transformation can only be activated during a full moon.
Consequently, possessing the ability does not allow a Lycanthrope to access this level of strength whenever desired.

Historical Conflict with Vampires
Vampires are historical enemies of the Lycanthropes.
The conflict between the two races eventually placed the Lycanthropes under severe pressure and caused considerable losses.
During roughly the same historical period, the Dark Elves were suffering through their own conflict with the Elves.
Alliance with the Dark Elves
The Lycanthropes eventually allied with the Dark Elves.
The alliance was formed relatively late, after both races had already suffered significant losses in their respective conflicts.
Despite this, cooperation gave both populations a greater chance of survival.
The Lost Barrier-Crossing Artifact
During their crisis, the allied Dark Elves and Lycanthropes discovered the third of the ancient Barrier-Crossing Artifacts.
This artifact had been lost long before their alliance.
Its rediscovery provided them with a way to cross the divine barriers separating the continents.
Evacuation to Halvmen
The artifact was ultimately used for a desperate evacuation rather than an ordinary expedition.
The evacuation prioritized those who needed to be removed from the continuing conflict, including children, elders, women, and others unable to remain on the front lines.
A portion of the Dark Elf and Lycanthrope populations successfully crossed the continental barrier and eventually arrived in Halvmen.
Those Who Remained
Not every Lycanthrope participated in the evacuation.
Many powerful individuals and capable fighters remained behind to continue resisting their enemies and protect the evacuation.
These Lycanthropes did not simply disappear after the refugees departed.
Surviving Lycanthrope populations continued to exist separately from the group that had migrated to Halvmen.
Lycanthropes in Halvmen
The refugees who reached Halvmen established a population there alongside the Dark Elves who had escaped with them.
By César's current era, descendants of this population still exist within Halvmen.
Luna, César's biological mother, belongs to this Lycanthrope population.
Original Future Timeline
César possesses knowledge of a future several decades beyond his current era because of the story he read during his previous life.
By the relevant point in that original future timeline, the Lycanthrope population of Halvmen had already become extinct.
The Lycanthrope race itself, however, had not disappeared.
Lycanthropes belonging to populations outside Halvmen still existed, including powerful individuals descended from those who had remained behind during the ancient evacuation.
César's Misconception
The difference between the current era and the future César remembers can create gaps in his understanding of the race.
In the future story familiar to him, the Halvmen Lycanthropes had already disappeared, while powerful Lycanthropes from other populations still existed.
Consequently, when César encountered his mother during the much earlier era in which he now lives, his expectations concerning the strength of Lycanthropes were influenced by the individuals known from the future.
This contributed to his initial belief that Luna was an unusually powerful Lycanthrope rather than immediately understanding the full historical context surrounding her population.
