Karkínicas

I Reincarnated as a Goblin Wiki

Karkínicas are a powerful Devilhuman race native to Halvmen. They inhabit the stronger-Mana region beyond the river that separates it from the poorer forest region.

Highly intelligent and extremely dangerous in their preferred environment, Karkínicas possess numerous tentacles, powerful paralyzing venom, exceptional swimming ability, acute sensitivity to Mana, and a Racial Ability capable of transforming the terrain around them.

Spoiler Warning: This article contains information about Karkínica society, their abilities, their current ruling family, and César's first encounter with the race.

Overview

Karkínicas are among the powerful races found on the high-Mana side of Halvmen.

The river dividing the poorer forest from this region marks a considerable change in danger. Beyond it, the greater concentration of ambient Mana supports significantly stronger races, with the Karkínicas being one of the first major peoples encountered after crossing into this territory.

Appearance

Karkínicas display extreme sexual dimorphism.

Although males and females share several recognizable racial traits, particularly their horns, reddish eyes, and numerous tentacles, their overall body structures differ dramatically.

Males

Male Karkínicas possess enormous and highly monstrous bodies. Their anatomy is dominated by numerous thick tentacles, while their heads possess large horns, reddish eyes, and heavily developed mouths filled with prominent teeth.

Compared with females, males possess a far less humanoid appearance.

Females

Female Karkínicas possess a much more humanoid appearance than males while retaining the defining characteristics of the race.

They possess horns, reddish eyes, and numerous powerful tentacles extending around their bodies.

Sexual Dimorphism

The difference between the sexes is sufficiently pronounced that an unfamiliar observer could easily mistake males and females for entirely different creatures.

Males possess the massive and monstrous form associated with the race's most intimidating appearance, while females retain a predominantly humanoid upper-body structure combined with the race's characteristic tentacles.

Habitat

Despite their aquatic capabilities, Karkínicas do not normally choose large rivers as their preferred habitat.

They favor streams, wet environments, muddy terrain, and areas where moisture is readily available.

Their territory lies within the high-Mana region of Halvmen, beyond the river separating it from the poorer forest region.

Swimming Ability

Karkínicas are exceptionally powerful swimmers.

Their swimming speed exceeds that of both Murlocs and Adaros, two races already well adapted to aquatic environments.

This makes encountering a Karkínica in water particularly dangerous.

Relationship with Adaros

Adaros are capable of traveling away from rivers for considerably longer periods than many other aquatic races, but they are cautious about venturing deeply into the high-Mana region.

One major reason is the presence of Karkínicas. Their superior swimming ability and overall strength allow them to hunt Adaros that enter too deeply into their territory.

Intelligence

Karkínicas possess very high intelligence.

They should not be confused with unintelligent aquatic monsters merely because of their unusual anatomy. They are a sapient race with their own social organization, leadership, preferences, and culture.

Mana Perception

Karkínicas possess extremely acute natural sensitivity to Mana.

They can perceive nearby presences through disturbances and concentrations of Mana with remarkable effectiveness, making it difficult for many creatures to approach their territory unnoticed.

This perception is a natural characteristic of the race and should not be confused with the Gnolls' Mana Smell Racial Ability.

Paralyzing Venom

The tentacles of a Karkínica contain an extremely dangerous paralyzing venom.

This gives their tentacles a purpose beyond movement and physical restraint. Contact with their venom can severely impair an opponent's ability to continue moving or fighting.

The exact duration, onset time, and resistance requirements of the venom are not currently known.

Racial Ability

Karkínicas possess a powerful environmental Racial Ability that allows them to alter the terrain surrounding them.

Even when fighting on relatively dry land, a Karkínica can cause the surrounding area to become increasingly wet and muddy.

The transformed environment strongly favors the Karkínica. Its mobility increases dramatically while opponents find movement and escape much more difficult.

Rather than merely adapting to the battlefield, the Karkínica effectively changes the battlefield into an environment suited to itself.

The official name, effective radius, duration, Mana cost, and precise limits of this Racial Ability have not yet been revealed.

Combat

Karkínicas combine several natural advantages that make them exceptionally dangerous opponents.

Their numerous tentacles provide extensive reach, their venom can paralyze enemies, their Mana perception makes ambushes difficult, and their environmental Racial Ability can drastically reduce an opponent's ability to retreat.

In wet or muddy environments, their already formidable mobility becomes an even greater advantage.

Society

Karkínica society is matriarchal.

Females occupy the principal leadership positions, and the current leader of the group is female.

This social structure should not be interpreted as evidence that one sex is inherently stronger than the other. It represents the organization and traditions of Karkínica society.

The Current Leader

The current Karkínica leader is a female whose name has not yet been revealed.

She has a husband and a daughter. Her daughter has become a particular source of frustration for her because of her repeated rejection of potential Karkínica partners.

The Leader's Daughter

The daughter of the Karkínica leader is exceptionally powerful and possesses a considerable amount of Mana.

Unlike what her mother would prefer, she shows far greater interest in studying than in accepting the candidates presented to her.

She particularly enjoys reading old books and examining jewelry, relics, and other objects left behind by peoples who once inhabited or traveled through the region.

Ancient Relics

Among the objects studied by the leader's daughter are artifacts associated with Lycanthropes and Dark Elves.

These objects are especially valuable because both peoples possessed knowledge that was uncommon among most Devilhuman races of Halvmen, including genuine methods related to Mana cultivation.

Her interest in such relics makes her an unusual source of knowledge about peoples and practices that have largely disappeared from the surrounding region.

Search for an Outsider

After seeing her daughter reject numerous Karkínica candidates, the leader eventually orders her husband—the girl's father—to search for a possible candidate from another race.

This decision becomes important when an unusual outsider enters Karkínica territory.

Encounter with César

During César's first journey across the river and into the stronger-Mana region, he enters territory where the Karkínicas can detect his presence.

Their exceptional Mana perception contributes to his discovery, and he is eventually captured by the Karkínicas.

The father of the leader's daughter recognizes that César is an outsider from another race and sees him as a possible answer to the task given to him by his wife.

As a result, César becomes involved with the ruling family shortly after entering the high-Mana region.

This does not by itself determine the eventual relationship between César and the leader's daughter.
