Divine Beasts are extraordinary supernatural creatures belonging to ancient and exceptionally powerful bloodlines in the world of I Reincarnated as a Goblin.
Unlike ordinary Animals and Mana Beasts, Divine Beasts are defined by their extraordinary lineage rather than simply by the amount of Mana they possess or the degree to which they have developed.
Known Divine Beast bloodlines include Dragons, Phoenixes, Golden Crows, Kunpeng, Black Tortoises, and White Tigers.
Overview
Divine Beasts are connected to some of the oldest and most extraordinary creature lineages known to have existed.
Their descendants may possess vastly different levels of power depending on the quality and purity of the Divine Beast bloodline they inherited.
Consequently, belonging to a Divine Beast lineage does not mean that every descendant possesses identical strength.
Known Divine Beast Bloodlines
- Dragon
- Phoenix
- Golden Crow
- Kunpeng
- Black Tortoise
- White Tiger
These are known examples rather than a statement that no other Divine Beast bloodlines exist.
Bloodline
Bloodline is one of the defining concepts surrounding Divine Beasts.
A creature does not become a Divine Beast merely by accumulating enormous quantities of Mana or becoming exceptionally powerful.
Instead, Divine Beast status is connected to descent from the corresponding extraordinary lineage.
Bloodline Purity
Divine Beast descendants do not necessarily inherit their ancestral bloodline to the same degree.
Bloodline purity is therefore an important factor in the potential of a Divine Beast descendant.
Two creatures connected to the same Divine Beast lineage may possess very different potential depending on how strongly that lineage is expressed within them.
Divine Beasts do not currently possess a single universal formal ranking system based purely on species.
Divine Beasts and Mana Beasts
Divine Beasts and Mana Beasts are fundamentally different classifications.
A Mana Beast originates from an animal whose Mana has developed enough to produce meaningful supernatural changes.
A Divine Beast, by contrast, belongs to an extraordinary inherited bloodline.
Therefore:
A Mana Beast does not automatically become a Divine Beast by growing stronger.
No amount of ordinary Mana Beast development can simply transform an unrelated animal into a Dragon, Phoenix, or another Divine Beast lineage.
Ancient Divine Beasts
Divine Beast lineages extend back into extremely ancient periods of the world's history.
Ancient beings associated with Dragons, Phoenixes, Kunpeng, White Tigers, Black Tortoises, and other extraordinary lineages existed during eras far removed from the present age.
Many modern beliefs concerning such beings have survived through legends, incomplete records, and stories whose accuracy may vary considerably.
Dragons
Dragons are one of the known Divine Beast bloodlines.
True Dragons belong to an ancient supernatural lineage and should not be confused with unrelated creatures that merely possess a dragon-like appearance.
Dragon bloodlines can continue through descendants even when the descendant is not equivalent to one of the ancient primordial members of the lineage.
Phoenixes
Phoenixes are another ancient Divine Beast bloodline.
As with Dragons, belonging to the Phoenix lineage is fundamentally different from merely resembling a Phoenix.
Phoenix descendants can carry varying degrees of the ancestral bloodline.
Golden Crows
Golden Crows belong to another known Divine Beast bloodline.
They are distinct from ordinary birds and from unrelated supernatural creatures that may possess similar characteristics.
Kunpeng
Kunpeng are included among the known ancient Divine Beast lineages.
Their complete characteristics and history have not yet been revealed.
Black Tortoises
Black Tortoises belong to one of the known Divine Beast bloodlines.
Their complete characteristics and historical role have not yet been revealed.
White Tigers
White Tigers are another known Divine Beast bloodline.
Their classification refers to the supernatural lineage rather than simply to an ordinary tiger possessing white coloration.
Divine Beasts and Deviants
Divine Beasts must be clearly distinguished from Deviants.
A Deviant may possess a physical form resembling a known Divine Beast, but appearance does not establish ancestry.
A Dragon-shaped Deviant is therefore not automatically a Dragon.
Likewise, a Phoenix-shaped Deviant is not automatically a Phoenix.
Deviant form and Divine Beast lineage are separate concepts.
The Dragon-Shaped Deviant
An extraordinarily powerful Level 9 Deviant once existed in a form resembling a Dragon.
Despite its appearance, this entity was not a true Dragon and did not belong to the Dragon Divine Beast lineage.
Its remains are connected to the supernatural nature and extraordinary Mana concentration of the Sacred Continent.
Confusing this being with an actual Dragon would therefore produce an incorrect interpretation of ancient history.
The Phoenix-Shaped Deviant
Another Level 9 Deviant possessed a form resembling a Phoenix.
This entity was likewise not a true Phoenix and did not belong to the Phoenix Divine Beast lineage.
Its remains are connected to the supernatural nature of the Demonic Continent.
True Dragon and Phoenix Lineages
Actual Dragon and Phoenix bloodlines existed independently of the dragon-shaped and phoenix-shaped Deviants.
This distinction became especially important during a later ancient crisis involving the Gods and Devils.
During that conflict, the Gods temporarily restored powerful ancient beings belonging to genuine Dragon and Phoenix lineages.
These beings were actual members of those supernatural bloodlines and should not be confused with the Level 9 Deviants whose forms merely resembled them.
Golden Fire Eagle
The Golden Fire Eagle represents another example of why appearance, lineage, and supernatural classification must be kept separate.
It belonged to a rare ancient lineage and possessed extraordinary characteristics.
Its feathers naturally rejected Mana, while its unusual fire could use Mana as fuel.
Ancient members of this lineage were known to prey upon Dragons, although later stories greatly exaggerated this relationship.
The Golden Fire Eagle should not automatically be classified as a Divine Beast merely because it could threaten creatures belonging to Divine Beast lineages.
Power and classification are not the same thing.
Divine Beast Descendants
Divine Beast bloodlines can continue through descendants.
Such descendants may inherit only a portion of the characteristics and potential associated with their ancient ancestors.
The strength of this inheritance depends heavily on bloodline purity.
Consequently, the existence of a Divine Beast descendant does not imply that the creature possesses the same power as the primordial ancestor from which the lineage originated.
Bloodline and Species
The supernatural world contains many creatures whose physical appearance can resemble legendary beings.
Appearance alone is insufficient to determine whether such a creature truly belongs to a Divine Beast lineage.
Determining the difference requires understanding the creature's actual origin and bloodline.
Common Misconceptions
“A powerful Mana Beast eventually becomes a Divine Beast.”
Incorrect.
Divine Beast classification is connected to extraordinary bloodlines, not a universal next stage of Mana Beast development.
“Every dragon-shaped creature is a Dragon.”
Incorrect.
Physical form alone does not establish Dragon lineage.
“The Level 9 Dragon-shaped Deviant was a true Dragon.”
Incorrect.
It resembled a Dragon but was a Deviant rather than a member of the Dragon Divine Beast lineage.
“The Level 9 Phoenix-shaped Deviant was a true Phoenix.”
Incorrect.
It was a Deviant whose form resembled a Phoenix.
“Every Divine Beast descendant has the same power.”
Incorrect.
Bloodline purity can greatly influence the potential of individual descendants.
“A creature that defeats a Divine Beast must also be a Divine Beast.”
Incorrect.
Combat strength does not determine supernatural classification.
