Skeletal Slimes are a powerful Devilhuman race native to the high-Mana region of Halvmen. They possess gelatinous bodies and display extreme sexual dimorphism, with males developing massive mineral-based skeletal structures while females retain a much more humanoid and predominantly gelatinous appearance.
Metals and minerals play a fundamental role in their biology, diet, and reproduction. Their unusual reproductive system would later cause Humans to completely misunderstand the sexes of the race.
Overview
Skeletal Slimes originate from the stronger-Mana side of Halvmen and are considerably different from ordinary slimes.
Their bodies are primarily gelatinous, but males develop a solid internal skeletal structure through the absorption of metals, minerals, and other suitable materials during their development.
Females do not possess this mineral skeleton.
Appearance
Skeletal Slimes possess one of the most extreme forms of sexual dimorphism among known Devilhumans.
Adult males are massive and monstrous in appearance, while females possess a much more humanoid form.
Male Skeletal Slimes
Male Skeletal Slimes possess enormous gelatinous bodies reinforced by a prominent internal skeleton.
Parts of this skeletal structure may also provide substantial external protection, giving males a heavily armored and intimidating appearance.
Males primarily serve as protectors and fighters within their communities. Their role is to defend the group and confront external threats.
Male Anatomy
The defining characteristic of adult males is the solid structure contained within their otherwise gelatinous bodies.
The materials required to form this structure are absorbed during the developmental stage of a true Skeletal Slime egg.
Female Skeletal Slimes
Female Skeletal Slimes possess a much more humanoid appearance than males.
Unlike males, females do not possess a mineral skeleton. Their bodies remain predominantly gelatinous.
Females traditionally focus more heavily on raising the next generation and searching for deposits containing metals and minerals.
Metals and Females
The metals collected by females are not incorporated into their own bodies.
Females can use metals as materials for clothing and other crafted items, while knowledge of mineral deposits is particularly important when searching for suitable locations for eggs.
Diet
Skeletal Slimes consume metals and minerals.
Mineral-rich locations are therefore valuable to the race not merely as resources, but as places directly connected to their survival and reproduction.
Normal Reproduction
Female Skeletal Slimes reproduce through eggs.
Before placing an egg, a female searches for an area known to contain a high concentration of suitable metals and minerals.
The egg is then placed near these resources so that it can absorb material from its surroundings during development.
Development of the Skeleton
While developing, the egg absorbs metals, minerals, and suitable crystalline materials from its surroundings.
These absorbed materials are used in the development of the skeletal structure associated with the race.
This makes the location chosen for an egg extremely important.
Male Asexual Reproduction
Male Skeletal Slimes possess an additional and highly unusual reproductive capability.
A male can reproduce asexually and create a different type of egg.
This egg does not produce another Skeletal Slime.
Ordinary Slime Offspring
The eggs produced asexually by males hatch into ordinary slimes.
These offspring possess simple, roughly spherical gelatinous bodies and primarily move by bouncing.
They lack the high intelligence of Skeletal Slimes but are naturally obedient to them.
Two Different Reproductive Processes
Skeletal Slimes therefore possess two fundamentally different reproductive processes.

Traditional Skeletal Slime society displays a noticeable division of roles between males and females.

Searching for minerals is particularly important for females because a rich deposit can provide a suitable developmental site for future eggs.
This knowledge sometimes leads females far from the normal territory of their race.
The Young Female Explorer
One young female Skeletal Slime traveled into the poorer forest region while helping search for minerals suitable for eggs that would eventually become her younger siblings.
Although the forest possessed relatively little ambient Mana, she knew that a particular location within it contained unusually rich mineral deposits.
This made the area valuable despite the otherwise inferior Mana conditions.
Friendship with the Gnomes
During her visits to the forest, the young Skeletal Slime became friends with the daughter of the Gnome leaders.
Their friendship later became extremely important when the peoples living in the forest came under attack.
The Hidden Refuge
Knowledge of the mineral-rich area contributed to the discovery and use of a hidden excavated refuge near the deposits.
The location provided a place where survivors could remain concealed within the forest.
The Harpy Connection
The network of friendships extended beyond the Gnomes and Skeletal Slimes.
The sister of the Harpy leader was also connected to the group through friendship.
This relationship helped the surviving Harpies gain access to the same hidden refuge.
Survivors of the Forest
As a result, personal relationships formed before the destruction of the forest races became one of the reasons some Gnomes and Harpies managed to survive.
They remained hidden near the mineral-rich area while the outside region appeared to have been largely cleared of its former inhabitants.
Disappearance of the Females
At some point in the future, female Skeletal Slimes disappear.
By the time Humans encounter and study the surviving members of the race, only males remain.
The circumstances responsible for the disappearance of the females are not currently known.
The Human Misunderstanding
Humans who encountered Skeletal Slimes in the future had no surviving female specimens with which to compare the males.
They nevertheless observed that the surviving Skeletal Slimes could produce eggs without a partner.
From this evidence, Human researchers reached an incorrect conclusion: they believed the surviving males were actually females.
A Race Believed to Have No Males
Because the supposed "females" could reproduce alone, Humans came to believe that Skeletal Slimes were a race without males.
The truth was the opposite.
The individuals Humans encountered were males using their natural asexual reproductive ability to create ordinary slimes.
Human Exploitation
Ordinary slimes produced by male Skeletal Slimes became useful to Humans because they could be processed as materials for potion production.
Humans therefore captured surviving male Skeletal Slimes and exploited their ability to continually produce ordinary slime eggs.
Since Humans misunderstood the sex of their captives, historical Human records incorrectly identified these males as females.
Historical Irony
Human knowledge of the race was therefore built from an incomplete population.
Their understanding of Skeletal Slime biology appeared reasonable based on the specimens available to them, but the absence of true females caused them to fundamentally misunderstand the species.
