Harpy

I Reincarnated as a Goblin Wiki

Harpies are a powerful winged Devilhuman race distinguished by their avian characteristics, strong natural combat potential, and exceptional specialization in aerial movement.

Although they currently survive only in greatly reduced numbers, Harpies were originally the strongest race inhabiting the poorer region of Halvmen.

Major Spoiler Warning: This article contains information concerning Scar, the Church, the destruction of several races, the hidden survivors of the forest, and events that take place before César's rise.

Overview

Harpies combine humanoid and avian characteristics.

Both males and females possess bird-like legs and functional wings, although the structure of their upper limbs differs significantly between the sexes.

Unlike other winged races whose ability to fly is relatively limited, Harpies are genuine aerial specialists.

They are also naturally powerful compared to most of the races that once inhabited the poorer regions of Halvmen.

Appearance

Harpies possess pronounced avian characteristics, including feathered wings and bird-like legs.

Their anatomy differs considerably between males and females.

This difference represents one of the most distinctive examples of sexual dimorphism within the race.

Male Harpies

Male Harpies possess both humanoid arms and a separate pair of functional wings.

Their wings grow independently from their arms, allowing males to retain ordinary hands while remaining fully capable of flight.

They also possess bird-like legs and generally display more pronounced avian characteristics than females.

Female Harpies

Female Harpies possess a more humanoid overall appearance, but their upper limbs differ fundamentally from those of males.

Instead of possessing separate humanoid arms and wings, a female Harpy's wings replace her arms and function as her primary upper limbs.

Like males, females also possess bird-like legs.

Flight

Flight is one of the defining characteristics of the Harpy race.

Harpies are naturally specialized for aerial movement and are significantly more capable in the air than races whose wings serve only as a secondary form of mobility.

Their ability to move and fight from the air gives them a considerable advantage over most ground-based races.

Aerial Specialization

Harpies are capable enough in the air to be considered a genuine aerial military force.

César distinguishes them from races such as the Lepidans, whose wings are useful but whose flight performance is too limited for serious aerial warfare.

Harpies, by contrast, possess the natural characteristics required for organized aerial operations.

Natural Strength

Harpies are not merely skilled fliers.

They are also naturally strong compared to the other races that historically inhabited the poorer region of Halvmen.

Before their decline, they were considered the strongest race within that region.

The Poor Region of Halvmen

Harpies lived within the poorer region of Halvmen despite possessing considerably greater natural strength than most of the races around them.

Their presence in this region should therefore not be interpreted as proof that the race itself was weak.

Harpy Territory

Historically, the Harpies occupied a forested area located close to the boundary separating the poorer region from territory with higher Mana concentration.

A river served as a natural frontier between these areas.

Because of its proximity to the higher-Mana territory, the Harpy region was one of the more valuable areas within the poorer region.

A Dangerous Position

The same location that gave the Harpies access to a valuable region also placed them in a highly dangerous position.

Their territory stood close to the boundary with stronger forces and became one of the first major areas to suffer organized attacks.

Scar's Attack

Scar was directly responsible for the destruction of many of the races that once inhabited the forest region.

He carried out these attacks under orders from the Church.

Because the Harpies were the strongest race in the poorer region and occupied one of its most strategically important territories, they became one of the principal targets.

The Fall of the Harpies

The Harpies suffered devastating losses during Scar's campaign.

Their population was reduced to only a small number of survivors.

As a result, the Harpies encountered in the present are considerably weaker as a population than the race once was historically.

Current Condition

Only a small number of Harpies remain.

These survivors live in hiding within the forest.

Their current weakness reflects the destruction of their population rather than the natural limitations of the race.

Hidden Survivors

The Harpies were not completely exterminated.

Together with the Gnomes, they are among the only peoples attacked in the region who managed to survive as hidden groups within the forest.

Their continued existence is largely unknown to those outside the region.

Goblins and Scar's Exception

The Goblins of the forest were not spared for the same reason as the Harpies or Gnomes.

Scar deliberately allowed the Goblins to remain.

Their continued presence serves a hidden purpose connected to a resource Scar wishes to keep secret.

The Hidden Mana Vein

A Mana Vein exists within the forest.

Scar knows of its existence and deliberately keeps it hidden.

Although he acts under the Church's authority, Scar does not fully trust the organization and prefers to keep the Mana Vein as a secret resource.

Why the Goblins Were Left Alive

The Goblins unintentionally function as a natural barrier around the forest.

Their presence discourages exploration, creates danger for travelers, and increases the likelihood that strangers entering the area will be detected or attacked before reaching more important locations.

Scar therefore views them as useful cover for the Mana Vein.

A Living Smoke Screen

From Scar's perspective, the Goblins serve as both a distraction and a protective screen.

Anyone investigating the forest may assume that the Goblins are the primary danger in the region without realizing that a much more valuable resource is being concealed nearby.

The Irony of Scar's Plan

Scar's decision to leave the Goblins alive eventually creates an unforeseen problem.

Among the Goblins is César, whose arrival radically changes the future of the entire region.

The very population Scar preserved as expendable cover ultimately becomes the foundation of a new power capable of uncovering and disrupting his plans.

Harpy Society

Harpy society is traditionally matriarchal.

Females occupy the dominant social and leadership positions within their society.

This is a traditional cultural feature of the race.

Female Leadership

Leadership among Harpies has historically been associated primarily with females.

This does not necessarily mean that every female Harpy is individually stronger than every male.

The matriarchal structure describes their social organization rather than an universal rule regarding individual strength.

Racial Abilities

Some Harpies possess a Racial Ability that allows them to enhance their feathers using Mana.

The ability is not universal and only appears in certain individuals.

Mana-Enhanced Feathers

By channeling Mana into their feathers, Harpies possessing this ability can greatly increase their hardness and sharpness.

The reinforced feathers can become sufficiently hard and sharp to function as natural weapons.

Feather Projectiles

Reinforced feathers can be launched as projectiles.

This allows Harpies possessing the ability to combine aerial mobility with ranged attacks.

Such individuals can be particularly dangerous while fighting from the air.

Mana and Feather Quality

The quality of the reinforced feathers depends on the Mana used by the Harpy.

Greater Mana investment can increase both hardness and sharpness.

Therefore, two individuals with the same Racial Ability may produce very different results depending on their Mana and ability to use it.

Ordinary Mana

The feather-enhancement ability does not rely on a separate supernatural energy.

It uses ordinary Mana.

Individual Variation

Harpies without the feather-enhancement ability still retain the race's natural strength and aerial specialization.

Possessing wings and possessing this Racial Ability are therefore separate characteristics.

Male and Female Combat Differences

The anatomical differences between male and female Harpies naturally affect how they interact with the environment.

Males retain humanoid arms and hands in addition to their wings, while females use wings as their upper limbs.

This distinction does not determine which sex is universally stronger, but it does create different physical characteristics between them.

Harpies and Lepidans

Harpies and Lepidans demonstrate that possessing wings does not automatically mean two races have the same role or capabilities.

Trait Harpy Lepidan
Functional Wings Yes Yes
Flight Specialization High Limited
Natural Combat Strength High Low
Aerial Military Potential High Low
Primary Specialization Aerial Combat Botany

Strategic Value

Harpies possess major strategic value due to the combination of natural strength and aerial specialization.

Their ability to fight and move through the air gives them access to tactical possibilities unavailable to most Devilhuman races.

Individuals with the feather-enhancement Racial Ability gain an additional advantage through ranged aerial attacks.

César's Perspective

César does not judge the Harpies according to their weakened present condition alone.

Their surviving population represents only a fragment of what the race was historically capable of becoming.

He recognizes that, if allowed to recover, the Harpies could become one of the most important military races under his influence.
