Kobold
The Kobolds are a subterranean race inhabiting Halvmen. They commonly live in burrows and underground settlements, where their extraordinary senses, natural digging instincts and ability to understand subterranean terrain make them exceptionally well adapted to life beneath the surface.
Kobolds are also dangerous natural fighters. Their claws, jaws and tails can all be used as weapons, while their Racial Ability, Intimidation, allows them to directly attack the mind of an opponent with overwhelming fear.
Appearance
Kobolds combine canine and reptilian characteristics, although there is considerable sexual dimorphism between males and females.
Males possess a considerably more bestial appearance, with prominent canine features and a powerful physique. Females are much more humanoid in appearance while retaining characteristic animal ears, a tail and areas of scales.
The scaled portions of a Kobold's body are not merely cosmetic. Their scales provide additional natural protection against physical attacks.
Habitat
Kobolds favor subterranean environments and commonly construct burrows and underground settlements.
Unlike races that merely seek shelter inside existing caves, Kobolds possess a remarkable natural aptitude for excavation. Their senses and instincts allow them to expand underground spaces while understanding the surrounding rock with unusual precision.
Senses
Kobolds possess several highly developed natural senses. They have excellent hearing and an extremely powerful sense of smell, allowing them to detect nearby creatures and potential dangers even when visibility is limited.
They also possess natural night vision. Kobolds therefore do not require a separate Racial Ability to see effectively in darkness, an extremely useful characteristic for a race that spends much of its life underground.
Natural Excavators
One of the most valuable characteristics of the Kobold race is its instinctive understanding of subterranean terrain.
Kobolds can recognize which sections of rock are stable, which areas can safely support weight and which sections may be dangerous to excavate. This allows them to navigate and expand underground environments with remarkable efficiency.
Their instincts also help them identify locations where mineral veins or underground water may be found.
Mining
These characteristics make Kobolds exceptional miners. In terms of natural mining aptitude, they are considered superior to Gnolls.
Much of this advantage comes from their senses and their instinctive ability to read the structure of the earth rather than from ordinary visual inspection alone.
Society
Kobold communities are traditionally governed by males.
They function extremely well in packs, allowing groups of Kobolds to coordinate their movements and work together efficiently both underground and during confrontations.
Natural Weapons
Kobolds possess several weapons as part of their own anatomy. Their claws are powerful, their bites can inflict considerable damage, and their tails can be used offensively during close combat.
Their natural scales provide additional protection, allowing them to endure attacks that would cause greater harm to an unprotected body.
Racial Ability
Intimidation
Intimidation is the characteristic Racial Ability of the Kobolds. Rather than physically attacking the target, the ability directly affects the victim's mind.
When used successfully against an individual with a fragile mind, Intimidation can produce an overwhelming sensation of fear. The affected individual may lose the ability to respond rationally and attempt to flee without regard for their surroundings.
In particularly severe cases, the psychological pressure can become so intense that the victim loses consciousness from fear.
The effectiveness of Intimidation ultimately depends on the target's mental resistance. Individuals possessing sufficiently strong minds are considerably more difficult to overwhelm.
History
During the Human expansion into Halvmen in the original timeline, the Kobolds became notable for their refusal to accept Human enslavement.
Even when faced with overwhelming circumstances, they preferred continued resistance rather than submission. This prevented the Humans from turning the race into a compliant source of subterranean labor despite the extraordinary value of Kobold mining abilities.
