Gnolls are an intelligent Devilhuman race found on the continent of Halvmen.
They possess characteristics associated with hyenas and display particularly pronounced sexual dimorphism. Male Gnolls possess heavily bestial bodies, while females retain a considerably more humanoid appearance.
Despite their animal-like characteristics, Gnolls are classified as Devilhumans and should not be confused with Beastkin.
Overview
Gnolls are a physically capable race adapted to hunting, traveling, survival, and combat.
Their most distinctive physical characteristic is the considerable difference in appearance between males and females.
Male Gnolls possess massive and strongly animalistic bodies resembling humanoid hyenas. Female Gnolls, in contrast, retain a much more humanoid body structure while still displaying recognizable characteristics of their race.
At least some Gnoll populations live as nomadic groups rather than establishing permanent settlements.
One such group, led by Gailo, eventually encountered César and his Goblins, resulting in a major conflict between the two groups.
Classification
Gnolls belong to the broader racial classification known as Devilhumans.
Their animal-like characteristics do not make them Beastkin. Devilhumans and Beastkin are separate racial classifications within the world.
Appearance
Gnolls possess a mixture of humanoid and hyena-like characteristics, although their exact anatomy differs considerably between males and females.
Male Gnolls display the most strongly bestial characteristics of the race, while female Gnolls retain a significantly more humanoid appearance.
Male Gnolls
Male Gnolls are large, heavily built, and extremely bestial in appearance.
Their backs naturally lean forward, their necks are thick, and their shoulders are positioned high on the body. Their arms are proportionally long, contributing to a silhouette considerably different from that of a human.
Their legs possess a digitigrade structure suited to their animalistic anatomy.
Even when standing upright, a male Gnoll retains a posture and body structure that strongly resembles a large humanoid hyena.
Head and Fur
Male Gnolls possess elongated and heavy muzzles, powerful jaws, rounded animal ears, and dense fur covering most of their bodies.
A thick mane extends from the head toward the upper portion of the back, further emphasizing their bestial appearance.
Their musculature is powerful but follows their animalistic anatomy rather than resembling the proportions of a human bodybuilder.
Female Gnolls
Female Gnolls possess a considerably more humanoid appearance than males.
Their overall body proportions are much closer to those of a human, and their facial structure is significantly less bestial.
However, females still retain recognizable Gnoll characteristics, including hyena-like ears, animal facial traits, fur patterns, and other physical features associated with the race.
Their combination of humanoid anatomy and animal characteristics makes female Gnolls visually distinct from the much larger and more bestial males.
Sexual Dimorphism
Gnolls display pronounced sexual dimorphism.
Males are generally larger, heavier, more heavily furred, and substantially more animalistic in structure. Their long muzzles, powerful jaws, elongated arms, digitigrade legs, and forward-leaning posture give them the appearance of massive humanoid hyenas.
Females retain far more humanoid proportions and facial features, although their Gnoll heritage remains immediately recognizable through their animal characteristics.
Because of this difference, male and female Gnolls can appear dramatically different despite belonging to the same race.
Physical Capabilities
Gnolls possess naturally capable bodies suited to the demanding environments in which many of their groups live.
Male Gnolls in particular possess considerable physical strength as a consequence of their large frames and powerful musculature.
Their long limbs and digitigrade legs can also provide considerable mobility when sufficient space is available.
Individual capabilities can nevertheless vary significantly between members of the race.
Lifestyle
Some Gnolls organize themselves into nomadic groups that travel through the wilderness rather than permanently inhabiting a single settlement.
Such groups depend on hunting, combat ability, cooperation, and knowledge of their surroundings to survive.
Their communities can include warriors, hunters, ranged fighters, and other individuals whose abilities contribute to the survival of the group.
Gailo's group is one known example of a nomadic Gnoll community.
Mana
Like nearly all living beings, Gnolls naturally possess Mana.
The natural presence of Mana does not necessarily mean that an individual knows how to consciously manipulate or cultivate it.
Among the Gnolls known to César during his early encounters with the race, none had demonstrated conscious control of Mana.
This observation does not establish that Gnolls are inherently incapable of learning to manipulate Mana.
Conflict with the Goblins
One of the first major Gnoll groups encountered in the story was the nomadic band led by Gailo.
The relationship between the two groups eventually developed into a violent battle between the Gnolls and a considerably larger Goblin force.
The Gnolls were dangerous individual fighters, but several circumstances worked against them.
Most importantly, the battle occurred within a cave. The confined environment reduced the Gnolls' ability to fully exploit their mobility and prevented them from taking maximum advantage of their physical capabilities.
The Goblins also possessed a considerable numerical advantage.
These factors played an important role in the eventual defeat of the Gnoll group rather than the outcome simply being the result of individual differences in strength.
By the end of the conflict, sixteen Gnolls and forty-five Goblins had been killed.
