Gargoyles are a nocturnal race distinguished by their unusual stone-like physiology, powerful wings, and extraordinary defensive capabilities. They can inhabit a wide variety of environments and generally organize themselves into closely united clans.
Appearance
Gargoyles possess imposing humanoid bodies accompanied by several traits that give them a distinctly monstrous appearance. Their most recognizable characteristics include large functional wings, horns, claws, tails, and bodies capable of assuming a stone-like state.
There is noticeable sexual dimorphism between males and females, although both sexes retain the defining characteristics of the race.
Habitat
Gargoyles are highly adaptable and are capable of living in many different environments. Unlike races that depend heavily on a particular climate or terrain, Gargoyles are not restricted to a single type of habitat.
They are primarily nocturnal, with most of their normal activity taking place during the night.
Society
Gargoyles live in tightly connected clans. Members of a clan maintain strong bonds with one another, making cooperation and mutual protection important parts of their society.
Natural Characteristics
Flight
Despite their considerable body weight, Gargoyles are highly capable fliers. Their wings allow them to move through the air with surprising speed and control.
In battle, they can exploit this mobility to perform rapid aerial maneuvers and high-speed diving attacks against enemies below them.
Unusual Physiology
Gargoyle physiology differs significantly from that of most living races. Their biological requirements for breathing, eating, and sleeping are not the same as those of ordinary living beings.
They also possess a naturally high resistance to many forms of poison.
Racial Ability
Stone Form
Stone Form is the defining Racial Ability of the Gargoyle race. It allows a Gargoyle to transform its body into an extremely durable stone-like state.
Gargoyles commonly enter this state during the day, using it as a natural defensive mechanism while they rest.
While transformed, their physical durability increases dramatically. Their stone bodies are extremely difficult to damage through conventional physical attacks and are almost immune to magical attacks.
Most importantly, Stone Form does not leave a Gargoyle helpless. They remain capable of moving and fighting while transformed, allowing the ability to function as more than a passive form of protection.
Combat
Gargoyles combine exceptional durability with aerial mobility. Their ability to fight both in the air and while using Stone Form makes them extremely difficult opponents to defeat through straightforward attacks.
A Gargoyle can use its wings to rapidly approach an opponent, perform diving attacks, or reposition itself before relying on Stone Form when greater protection is required.
Their natural claws and physical strength further complement this fighting style, allowing them to remain dangerous even without specialized weapons.
