Aracne

I Reincarnated as a Goblin Wiki

Aracne are a powerful subterranean Devilhuman race native to Halvmen. While they are not particularly dominant on the surface, the situation changes dramatically underground, where their colonies extend through an enormous portion of the continent's cave systems.

Their high reproductive rate, strong family structure, venomous nature, resistance to debilitating effects, and exceptional adaptation to subterranean environments have allowed them to become the dominant presence throughout much of Halvmen's underground.

Major Spoiler Warning: This article contains information about the future extinction of the Aracne, their family structure, and César's encounter with a young female Aracne.

Overview

Aracne are primarily cave-dwelling creatures. Their colonies can be found throughout vast underground networks beneath Halvmen.

On the surface, they do not possess the same overwhelming advantage that they enjoy underground. Inside caves and tunnels, however, they are among the most dangerous and dominant races in the continent.

Their mastery of subterranean environments is particularly evident among males, whose enormous bodies conceal remarkable mobility and flexibility.

Underground Dominion

Aracne territory is not limited to a handful of isolated caves.

Their population and colonies extend throughout almost all of Halvmen's subterranean regions. Beneath territories that may belong to completely different races on the surface, extensive cave systems may still fall within the sphere of Aracne activity or control.

This enormous underground presence is partly possible because of the race's exceptionally high reproductive rate.

The Central Exception

There is one major exception to the widespread underground dominance of the Aracne: the central region of Halvmen.

The great powers of the continent are concentrated there, and the Aracne do not possess the same level of subterranean dominance beneath this central territory.

Therefore, their control over much of the underground should not be interpreted as meaning that the Aracne are the absolute rulers of Halvmen.

Appearance

Aracne display extreme sexual dimorphism.

Males possess enormous, monstrous spider-like bodies, while females have a much more humanoid appearance combined with prominent arachnid traits.

The dramatic difference in size and appearance between the sexes can make their actual social hierarchy surprising to outsiders.

Male Aracne

Male Aracne are enormous creatures whose bodies are heavily adapted for subterranean combat.

Despite their immense size and intimidating appearance, males are far more flexible than they initially seem. Their bodies allow them to navigate caves and underground passages with remarkable effectiveness.

This combination of size, flexibility, and familiarity with subterranean terrain makes male Aracne particularly dangerous when encountered underground.

Female Aracne

Female Aracne possess a considerably more humanoid appearance than males, although their arachnid nature remains clearly visible.

Females are individually more powerful than males and occupy the dominant positions within Aracne society and family groups.

However, their greater power does not mean that females regularly leave their homes to fight. Most spend much of their time within the colony, laying eggs, raising their children, protecting the family, and directing the activities of their partners and offspring.

Matriarchal Society

Aracne society is strongly matriarchal.

Females are the primary authority figures within their families and communities. Males commonly act according to the instructions of their mothers or partners.

As a result, the enormous male encountered guarding a tunnel or eliminating an intruder may not be the true authority of the colony. The individual directing him may be a female remaining much deeper within the nest.

Male Roles

Male Aracne are primarily suited to carrying out orders, defending their families, and killing threats.

They are highly effective in these roles, particularly within underground environments where their physical adaptations provide their greatest advantage.

Their competence in combat contrasts sharply with their poor ability to independently raise young.

Female Roles

Females rarely act directly unless circumstances require it.

Instead, they generally remain within the family territory, where they reproduce, care for eggs and offspring, organize the household, and direct their partners and children.

Because females are stronger than males, their relative absence from normal patrols and conflicts should not be mistaken for weakness.

Family Bonds

Despite their frightening appearance, Aracne possess strong family bonds.

They are extremely protective of their offspring and are affectionate toward their partners and families.

Unlike certain real-world spider behaviors that outsiders might associate with their appearance, Aracne do not consume their partners.

Protecting the family is one of the central characteristics of their society.

Reproduction

Aracne possess a very high reproductive rate.

Females lay numerous eggs and dedicate a considerable portion of their lives to caring for their offspring. This reproductive capacity is one of the reasons the race has been able to establish colonies throughout such extensive underground territories.

Raising those offspring, however, requires skills that are overwhelmingly associated with the females of the race.

Venom

Aracne are naturally venomous.

Their venom contributes to their effectiveness as subterranean predators and combatants.

At the same time, the race possesses an extraordinary defensive adaptation: Aracne are completely immune to poisons and venoms.

Poison Immunity

Poison immunity among the Aracne is absolute.

The source of the poison does not matter. Toxins originating from other creatures or races cannot poison an Aracne.

This makes poison-based strategies effectively useless against them.

Resistance to Negative Effects

Aracne also possess extremely high resistance to magic and abilities designed to impose debilitating conditions.

Effects such as slowing, dizziness, stunning, confusion, and similar negative states are considerably less effective against them than they would be against most other creatures.

Unlike their complete immunity to poison, this characteristic represents powerful resistance rather than absolute immunity.

Combat Underground

Fighting an Aracne underground is considerably more dangerous than confronting one on the surface.

Their bodies, senses, movement, and combat behavior are naturally suited to caves and tunnels. Male Aracne in particular can exploit narrow and irregular subterranean terrain despite their enormous size.

Their flexibility should never be underestimated merely because of their massive appearance.

Surface Combat

Aracne remain dangerous creatures on the surface, but they do not possess the same overwhelming environmental advantage there.

Their reputation as masters of the underground comes from the enormous difference between confronting them in open terrain and entering the subterranean world to which they are naturally adapted.

Future Extinction

In the future known from the original course of history, the Aracne become extinct.

The disappearance of the females becomes particularly catastrophic for the race.

Although males are excellent fighters and can efficiently carry out the commands of their mothers or partners, they are extremely poor at raising offspring without female guidance.

Once the females disappear, the surviving males prove incapable of maintaining the next generations effectively. The population consequently collapses until the race itself disappears.

Lost Knowledge

By the future era known to César from his previous life, the Aracne have already vanished.

Consequently, César does not possess useful prior knowledge about the race. Unlike peoples whose names, abilities, or histories he remembers, the Aracne represent one of the many parts of Halvmen's past that had already been lost before the events he originally knew.

The Leader's Daughter

During César's era, the daughter of an Aracne leader is still alive.

At some point, César encounters the young female while she is in a weakened state.

Because the Aracne are already extinct in the future history known to him, César does not recognize what race she belongs to.

Encounter with César

César provides the weakened girl with a place where she can remain while recovering.

Even in her weakened condition, however, he notices enough of her strength to understand that keeping such an unknown and potentially dangerous individual nearby could become a serious risk if circumstances went wrong.

Rather than attempting to keep her with him, César simply hopes that she will recover and eventually return to wherever she came from.

She ultimately leaves, and César does not encounter her again until much later.

César's Blind Spot

The encounter is unusual because César's knowledge of the future provides him with no meaningful advantage.

He has entered a period in which an entire civilization still exists beneath Halvmen even though, from the perspective of the history he remembers, that civilization has already disappeared without leaving enough information for him to recognize one of its members.
